Impact of Urbanisation and Demands for Mass Housing
Urbanization is a global phenomenon and India too has its special issues associated with population growth. It illustrates that many cities will swell with a higher population and also lead to the creation of more rural villages, which is not good for integral. Mass housing and affordable housing is the subject of great importance and to be addressed by all political, social, and primarily by the engineering community in India. The basic need for minimum shelter has to be provided for people irrespective of their social status. The estimated shortage of housing in India is about 24.71 million dwelling units and which may be doubled in the next decade if it is not addressed now properly. Housing construction in India is still popular with conventional archaic practices, which is time-consuming with less productivity and causing more housing storage. The net effect is a wide gap in demand and supply in every sector like in rural housing, economical budget housing, and muddle income sector housing.
Skilled Manpower Shortage in Industry
A recent survey was conducted by the Indian concrete institute of India after the post-conference session on “’ Precast building in India – practices, possibilities, and prospects’’ in the year 2011. It has been revealed that there exist wide gaps in design, architecture and execution phases. The success of precast concrete technology lies with well-skilled technicians and the shortage of skilled personnel in the construction industry. Hence, there is a need to promote this technology at the curriculum level of engineering graduates to operational technical skills training institutes. Status of Precast Concrete Technology in India Precast concrete technology is very popular in housing, factories and in infrastructure projects. In the early 70s, the precast concrete technology was first initiated through premier national laboratories of India to support government programs. The use of high strength steel, improvement in durability, gain in high early compressive strength in concrete, etc., have helped the precast industry in developing many innovative building products in particular for a long span and are a dimensional category. So technology adaptation and execution exist but total building precast concrete works are very scanty in India.
Why go for building construction with precast?
There are many benefits over conventional construction. Today precast concrete technologies have been adopted and practiced in the industry. Thermal, acoustic, seismic resistant technologies and beautiful pleasing architectural precast facades to the building are already available and practiced in many countries. Precast technology can be more popularised in the Indian construction industry with such innovative products and construction.
